Hickory Wind

Hickory Wind was written by Gram Parsons and Bob Buchanan in the late 60′s. It was recorded by Parsons with The Byrds on their Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. A woman from West Virginia disputes the authorship, claiming to have sold it to Parsons.

The song’s most beautiful rendition is probably that by Emmylou Harris, though she had some of the lyrics in the wrong order. She sings the tune in F. The song was also covered by Joan Baez, who sang it in C. Parsons recorded the original version in the key of G.

Hickory Wind

By Gram Parsons & Bob Buchanan © 1969 Ticson Music BMI

In South Carolina, there are many tall pines
I remember the oak tree that we used to climb
But now when I’m lonesome, I always pretend
That I’m gettin’ the feel of Hickory Wind

2
I started out younger at most everything
All the riches and pleasures , what else could life bring
But it makes me feel better each time it begins
Callin’ me home, Hickory Wind

3
It’s a hard way to find out that trouble is real
In a far away city with a far away feel
But it makes me feel better each time it begins
Callin’ me home, Hickory Wind

Callin’ me home, Hickory Wind
